A tsunami warning has been expanded to include parts of the California coast following an 8.9-magnitude earthquake off northeastern Japan.
The Tsunami Warning Center in Alaska says the warning is in effect from Point Conception near Lompoc to the Oregon-Washington border and parts of southern Alaska.

In California, the first waves are expected to hit San Francisco at 8:16 a.m., Santa Barbara at 8:24 a.m., Santa Monica at 8:39 a.m. and La Jolla at 8:48 a.m.
Warnings were issued for Hawaii and other parts of the Pacific following a tsunami early Friday.
Tsunami warnings are issued due to the imminent threat of a tsunami.
